Background of the Study

The introduction of Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems in healthcare settings has revolutionized the way patient information is recorded, accessed, and shared. At University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, EHRs are increasingly being used to improve the efficiency of healthcare delivery, including in emergency nursing. EHR systems allow for real-time access to patient histories, treatment plans, and diagnostic results, enabling healthcare providers to make informed decisions quickly.

Emergency nursing, which often involves rapid decision-making in high-pressure environments, can greatly benefit from EHRs. These systems provide emergency nurses with up-to-date patient information, reducing the time spent searching for paper records and minimizing errors. However, the full impact of EHR systems on emergency nursing efficiency has not been extensively studied in the Nigerian context. This study aims to assess the impact of EHR systems on the efficiency of emergency nursing care at University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, focusing on time management, care coordination, and patient outcomes.

Statement of the Problem

While EHR systems are increasingly implemented in healthcare institutions, their actual impact on the efficiency of emergency nursing care at University of Abuja Teaching Hospital remains unclear. The introduction of such technology has the potential to improve the quality and speed of care, but there may also be challenges such as system malfunctions, inadequate training, and resistance to change. This study will investigate the extent to which EHRs have impacted the efficiency of emergency nursing care, identifying both the benefits and challenges of using these systems.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of electronic health records on the efficiency of emergency nursing care at University of Abuja Teaching Hospital.
  2. To evaluate the benefits and challenges associated with the use of EHR systems in emergency nursing.
  3. To recommend strategies for improving the integration and utilization of EHR systems in emergency nursing practice.

Research Questions

  1. How do electronic health records impact the efficiency of emergency nursing care at University of Abuja Teaching Hospital?
  2. What benefits and challenges do emergency nurses experience when using EHR systems in their practice?
  3. How can the use of EHR systems be improved to enhance emergency nursing efficiency?

Research Hypotheses

  1. The use of electronic health records at University of Abuja Teaching Hospital improves the efficiency of emergency nursing care.
  2. Challenges such as inadequate training and system malfunctions reduce the effectiveness of electronic health records in emergency nursing.
  3. Improving EHR training and system reliability will enhance the efficiency of emergency nursing care.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the use of EHR systems in emergency nursing care at University of Abuja Teaching Hospital. Limitations may include resistance to using EHRs, variations in nurses' technological proficiency, and potential biases in reporting the impact of the system.

Definitions of Terms

  • Electronic Health Records (EHRs): Digital versions of patients' medical histories, treatment plans, and other relevant health information that can be accessed and shared among healthcare providers.
  • Emergency nursing efficiency: The ability of emergency nurses to provide timely and effective care, facilitated by tools such as EHRs.
  • Time management: The ability of emergency nurses to prioritize tasks and provide prompt care, aided by the use of EHRs.
